Boat Fishing at Whitby. Whitby Charters Skipper Association

After a quiet start to April fishing came on with a bang around mid month and has continued well ever since. Currently the water is heavy with algae in places but once your away from the May water algae it seems like your into the fish. Paul on sea otter 2 is reporting some top fishing on shads with over a 100 cod per day being taken at times. Paul has also recently reported some better pollock and had one this week to almost 15 pounds.
Paul Eddon on Trot on says his catches have been decent too. The best day so far being about 2 weeks ago when one of his anglers recorded over 9 stone for the day again most of the fish falling to shads an jelly tails which seem to be outfishing any other method at the current time.
Rich Ward on Shytorque has had many fish well into double figures and says he is looking forward to running shark trips again this summer after catching the ports first porbeagle last summer.
Sea spray has been doing well on the cod front but has also been experimenting with diverse species of late. Skipper Mal Pitman is currently targeting Turbot and rays and says he has free places for Tope and shark trips throughout the summer months.
All in all catches have been decent since the middle of April. The May water algae has posed a few problems but all the boats are reporting decent catches dispite this.

A fine day on Trot on Charters Whitby

The slog continues

Just spent half an hour updating Paul Kilpatrick's sea otter 2 website. It appears Paul has been having some good trips lately out of Whitby and is proving himself to be one of the very best Skippers around and probably the best In Whitby. These pictures show a few of Paul Kilpatricks recent whitby caught cod.

All Pauls pictures and other info can be viewed on the whitby sea otter 2 website at www.sea-otter2.co.uk

I'm also still spending an hour most nights updating the Whitby fishing club website. Im nearly there with just a few more pages to change to css and validate. Soon the whitby shore and rock angling club website will be complete. Tonights updated pages included the Archives of the Ship Inn and Whitby open matches and also the poem written by Bob Eglon about the members of the Whitby Fishing club which goes as follows :

An Ode To Whitby Sea Anglers

Whitby sea anglers are out, there is a northerly swell,

who knows who will win? no one can tell,

Ian Russel is up at Runswick Bay,

Niel Ingliss telling him that a big one got away.

Seas sing songs of fury down at the block,

this cold dark night we should have a knock,

Dave Perett they say has gone a billet bashing,

but Andy Craig's light wont stop flashing.

Fight off these thoughts from our minds we must,

in peeler and lugworm we place our trust,

Batch is fishing high up there on the cliff,

And Sped by his side says "he wont get a sniff",

At Newholme beck with the wind and sand blowing in your face,

they always reckon you should use a long trace,

there's a shout from Phil Mead "I've done it and last"

and Jimmy and George say "What a pendulum cast"

There's a shimmer of moonlight down Saltwick Bay,

It's a long far cry from a hot summers day,

Wackers fishing here with gloom on his face,

The townies have been and fished out the place.

To cast out and hope before low water slack,

then strike and hope that everything comes back,

Bri Harland is fuming, he's run out of hooks,

While Dave Johnson's so busy cooking the books.

At White stone the tangles are all out,

Big fish swim here there is no doubt,

the snow could be coming with a white squall,

but Killers ok in his red overall.

At Hommeril hole with wet socks and freezing toes,

leaning on his rod with a red runny nose,

one of Bernard Vasey's greatest pleasures,

is being in charge of weights and measures.

Now Dennis at Kettleness has caught a big cod,

the best he's had since sandy ran over his rod,

sitting here smoking a roll up he's at piece tonight,

Congratulations on winning this years fight.

This poem was kindly written by Bob Eglon for the presentation evening in season 96/97.

A Picture

Just thought I would liven things up in the blog with a picture. This one has to be my favourite at the moment as I think it illustrates so well what cod fishing from the rocks and cliffs is all about in yorkshire and the north east. More pictures like this one of sandsend can be viewed in the whitby sea anglers gallery by clicking here.

Up and running with the Yalasa guestbook.

Well we finally managed to get the guestbook working on the Yalasa site. After trying all weekend with free programs off the net that were full of errors Nick From Hebrides hosting kindly offered to write me a new error free guestbook.
Its 9pm on Monday night here and Ive just uploaded the guestbook onto the server and done a test post. All appears to be working really well and all I need to do now is ammend the header and footer files so that the guestbook takes on the theme of the site as a whole.

You can view the Yalasa guestbook by clicking here

If this guestbook proves succesful I will also add it to the whitby sea anglers website which as you will already know is the website for the Whitby Fishing Club.

What a week.

Well what a busy week. Ive been working on the whitby sea anglers website for an hour most nights. Im currently converting the site from its html format to css which allows you to use much less code in the program behind the website. The trouble is I dont know css very well so have been learning as I go along. All good stuff though. The whitby sea anglers fishing club website is almost finished and can be viewed by visiting www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk
Most evenings have involved a bait collecting/dog walking session, the main target at the moment being peeler crabs, ive been peelering most night s and will probably be doing a lot of crabbing right through the summer months. The aim is to get as many of those big north east coast peeler crabs as possible into the freezer whilst they are moulting. However at present the going is tough and I have only been able to gather a small percentage of the crabs I usually do in comparison to other years, I put this down to the water being colder due to a colder than average winter this year ( Water temps are said to be the lowest since 1996). What ever happened to global warming ?.
On Friday night I attended the meeting of the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Association of Sea Anglers ( YALASA ) a localised conservation group whoose aims generally are the preservation of fish stocks. I left home at 6 pm and the evening involved a drive down to Scarborough to meet a couple of other lads who attend the meeting and then on to the meeting held in a pub between bridlington and Hull. It was gone 11 when I finally manghed to get home again. Up for discussion at this meeting was the recent Bass management plan and proposed increase in bass minimum landing size and increased mesh size for bass nets. Also discussed was the proposal to have association members trained up as qualified fishing coaches. The association is to look at finding the £250 funding per person for the training. The association have also asked myself to add a contact page to the website so that people can leave their comments about yalasa and the matters the group adress. So far this has proven quite a difficult task with most of the free comments page programs available on the net holding quite a few errors. However good friend of YALASA Nick of Hebrided hosting is currently helping me with the comments page and with his expertise it is hoped to have it up and running in the near future. All the details of the meeting and YALASA as an organisation can be found on their website at www.yalasa.co.uk
Well here we are on Sunday and another week has flown by. Projects for today involve walking the dog, sorting the allottment, playing with the kids and updating pauls website www.sea-otter2.co.uk

First Post

Hello and welcome to my blog entitled sea fishing at Whitby. Within this blog I will record a lot of the things I do in relation to my hobbey of Fishing. The things I will discuss here include:

  • Bait collecting around the Whitby area in north Yorkshire
  • Shore and Rock Fishing / angling around the Whitby Area in North Yorkshire
  • Boat fishing off the coast of whitby in the north east of England
  • Writing and updating websites related to fishing in the Whitby Area, North Yorkshire
Amongst the websites I have written and updated so far are the following. Please feel free to take a look at them anytime you wish.

  • www.whitbyseanglers.co.uk or whitby sea anglers is the website I write for the local sea fishing / angling club here in Whitby North Yorkshire. The clubs full title is the Whibt sea anglers association. The site includes a background of the club , reguler results of the fishing clubs catches which often include cod , bass , whiting , billets , pollock , and rockling all caught from the Whitby and its surrounding areas including saltwick and runswick bay, Port mulgrave , staithes , boulby and Robin hoods bay. The Whitby sea anglers website also includes: a gallery showing the catches of the fishing club members, a season calender showing all the open fishing matches on the north east coast of England, Tide times for the whitby area , and an extensive archive about the achievments of Whitby sea anglers over the years. Basically whitby sea anglers website gives an excellent insite into club fishing in Whitby and the coastline of the north east. As with any site this site is always growing and it is hoped to add new features soon including articles on the Brittish cod Record a 56 pound record cod caught on a local boat called sea trek owned by skipper Stu Johnson. Sea trek is a member of the whitby charter skippers association for whom I also produce a website.
  • www.trotoncharters.co.uk Is a website recently written by myself for local skipper Paul (Dolly) Eddon. The website gives an insight into charter fishing from Whitby. The site includes a gallery showing pictures of Whiby boat caught cod , ling and many other species. Trot on charters is one of Whitbys finest fishing vessels. Paul Eddon's website can be located by clicking www.trotoncharters.co.uk
  • www.sea-otter2.co.uk Again is another website of a local charter skipper named Paul Kilpatrick. This site include reguler fishing updates which give an insight into the current situation regarding boat fishing at Whitby. If you like to fish from a boat and want to know if the fish are biting then drop by Paul's website and check out the fishing updates.
  • www.wcsa.co.uk Is the website for the Whitby Charter Skippers Association. If your thinking of catching some of those famous Whitby Cod then book a boat fishing trip from Whitby in north Yorkshire, this is the place to start. All the local boats are listed along with contact details so that you can make contact to ask further questions or book a charter trip. The association runs 3 angling festivals each year and all are very populer with prizes of up to £1500 for the heaviest fish being on offer. Remember that the uk cod record of 58 pounds was caught on one of the Whitby boats so your best chance of a big Yorkshire cod is with the Whitby Charter Skippers.
