Traditionally boat anglers at Whitby have targeted mainly cod, however a recent research article undertaken by The North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee has suggested that Whitby along with other north east coast ports could benefit from a diversification of fishing methods to target species of shark living off our coast. One of the first Whitby Skippers to try such fishing methods with any level of success has been Malcolm Pitman on his Whitby boat sea spray Charters.

Over the past few days I have re wrote the sea otter 2 website for Paul. The new site has some exciting new articles including one on shad fishing at whitby produced by boat fishing monthly. I intend to add some others in the coming months about various types of boat fishing including : Wreck fishing , shark fishing and Winter uptiding.

I Called Paul for a chat about the general state of play regarding cod fishing out of Whitby, and I was pleasantly surprised by the response he gave me. Were catching plenty of fish here Dave, and I'm not steaming more than 3 miles outside the harbour!" Paul explained. " Come up and have a day out you will see it for yourself". Fishing Hawsker Bottoms 27th Jan 2007

After a run of extreme bad luck for me (crashed the car whilst going fishing, snapped the tip of my rod, lost my bag off the cliff, lost my tiga headlight etc etc) things finally came right last Sunday night whilst fishing a mark near Hawsker bottoms at Whitby.

Our match started at 6pm and I fished a little gulley at the foot of the cliffs. After an hour with no bites I decided the mark was either empty or the strong crosswind was stopping me from fishing it properly as my gear was fast up on every cast. I pondered for a moment as to head into the gullies to my left (nearer the car - quicker to get away later in the evening) or to my right (one hell of a place to get back from at high tide and the tide was now rushing in). Remembering a fantastic catch by a fellow angler several years earlier in the same conditions I decided to go right. After 20 mins without seeing the rod twitch I thought "nothing here as well" When I started to wind in, just to confound my misery I was stuck fast), A couple of good pulls and my rotten bottom broke out but the rod was still bent over but I was retrieving line. Thinking it was weed I thought well what else can go wrong, then the weed kicked waking me up to the fact it was a fish that must have been laid on. I got it to the rocks below and picked it out, it was a nice fish of 6 pounds 8 ounces. Brilliant after going almost a full month without much to shout about I had one and a good one at that. Just makes you wonder how a 6 pounder can lay there and not move - bizarre but I have had 9 pounders do the same.
I cast straight back in with a bait I had prepared whilst watching the rod on the last cast. This time I had put different bait on the hook. After 20 mins nothing. I wound in dissapointed thinking there was only 1 fish there. Just to make sure I had a third cast with the same bait as the first cast - half a green peeler, 2 mussels and about a dozen small lugworm wrapped around a 6 o hook. Within minutes the rod lurched over and I was into another nice fish this time about 3-4 pounds. I unhooked it and wrapped a few more worms around the hook and cast straight back in. same thing happened again and with 5 mins I had another fish of about 5 pounds. Next cast same again but the fish came off half way in. Was the bait getting too big on the hook ?? bait up another and cast back in got 2 more fish to make a total of five. Next cast I lost another off half way in - again about 5 pounds. It was now getting late and it was nearly time to go. Just one more cast I thought hoping to get that 6th fish. After 15 mins the rod went right over again. I hit the bite but missed it so left it out for another 5 mins. Now I'm getting worried about missing the weigh in beacuse I've stayed longer than I should do. Just as I was going to wind in the rod goes again, but again I missed it. This time I had to go so wound in and set off back to the car. 45 mins later and after traversing rocks the size of houses I arrived back at the car then went onto the weigh in. I was absolutely kackered when I got back but glad my luck had finally returned, and somehow pleased I didn't get those extra fish - the bag was very heavy as it was when I climb up the 300 foot cliffs.

All in all not a bad night. Five fish for a weight of 23 pounds.

A bright moonlit evening met the members of Whitby angling club as they headed out to fish their midweek match on an ebbing to low water tide. With a slight northerly swell in the water expectations of good catches were high but for some reason the fish did not show in the bigger numbers seen over the previous weekend. Paul Kilpatrick was the night's top angler with a single codling of 2 pounds 7 ounces, Bernado Vasey came in second with a codling and a rockling for 2 pounds 4 ounces, Brian Harland took third with 2 billets and a rockling for 2 pounds 1 ounces.

Results : 1st Paul Kilpatrick 2-7(1), 2nd B Vasey 2-4(2), 3rd B Harland 2-1(3), D Thompson 1-15(1), D Hansen jnr 1-12(1), D Perett 0-6(1).

A dieing northerly sea swell met the Whitby sea anglers as they turned out to fish their 4 hour Sunday night match fished on a small low water to flood tide. Catches were better than of late with 16 anglers weighing in a total of 31 fish mostly codling. Glenn Kilpatrick was the nights top angler with 5 fish for exactly 23 pounds. Glenn’s bag now leads the way in the heaviest bag of the season competition and beats his previous seasons best bag of 19 pounds 5 ounces caught back in December. Brian Harland came in second with 3 codling for 13 pounds 2 ounces. Dave Perret took second place on the night with 4 codlings for 12 pounds 11 ounces.

A big north to north easterly sea swell met the Whitby sea anglers as they turned out to fish their weekly midweek match. Expectations of good catches were high after almost a month of flat calm seas, but as is often the case on the roughest nights the fish did not show in the numbers expected. Junior member Dan Craig continued his excellent season and came out on top in this match beating all the clubs senior members with a fine cod of 5 pounds 8 ounces. Rob Allison came in second with 2 codling for 4 pounds 13 ounces. Third place on the night went to Phil Mead with 1 cod for 4 pounds 5 ounces.

Sunday saw 9 members of the Whitby sea angling club fish the bell trophy team event over in Scarborough. Fishing against teams from across the Yorkshire coast Whitby faired well coming in second only a few ounces behind the strong team fielded by Scarborough Rock Anglers Society. Five of the nine Whitby anglers managed to find fish. Colin Stainthorpe showed his knowledge of the Scarborough area coming in first with 3 codlings for 8 pounds 7 ounces. Paul Kilpatrick had a good day taking second with 2 fish for 7 pounds 3 ounces. Philip mead continues to find the single codling with 1 fish 1 pounds 12 ounces.

Results: 1st Colin Stainthorpe 8-7(3), 2nd P Kilpatrick 7-3(2), 3rd P Mead 1-12(1), W Atkinson 0-9(1), G Kilpatrick 0-8(1).

A slight north westerly sea swell met the Whitby sea anglers as they turned out to fish their 3 hour midweek competition. This match was fished over low water which usually gives a good chance of catching codling from the scars and kelp beds which are exposed over the bottom of the tide. It was a great night for Colin Stainthorpe who caught a personal best cod of 10 pounds 5 ounces to win the match. Colin’s fish now takes the lead in the heaviest fish of the season competition narrowly beating Glenn Kilpatrick’s fish of 10 pounds 4 ounces caught on the 3rd of December. In second place was Rob Allison with a single fish of 6 pounds 8 ounces. Dave Perrett took 3rd place with 4 fish for 5 pounds 9 ounces.

On a mild windy evening the Whitby sea anglers fished their 4 hour Sunday night match with a slight long distance northerly sea swell in the water. Twelve anglers returned to the scales with a selection of fish including codling, rockling, whiting and flounder. Glenn Kilpatrick managed 18 whiting to take 1st place with 14 pounds 2 ounces, Dennis Thompson took second with 3 codling and 4 rockling for 13 pounds 12 ounces. Paul Kilpatrick had 4 codling for 8 pounds 5 ounces to take third place.

A moderate north westerly sea swell and coloured water gave good conditions for the Whitby sea anglers mid week match fished over high water. Catches were not quite as good as expected possibly due to the sea swell growing throughout the match. William Atkinson continued his good recent form and took 1st place with a mixed bag of 2 codling and 2 rocklings for 7 pounds 7 ounces. Rob Allison caught 3 codling for 6 pounds 14 ounces and came in second. Dave Perett came in third with 2 cod for 6 pounds 2 ounces. Dave had a rather unlucky night and could well have finished in first place as 2 fish he had caught earlier in the night were washed out of his bag never to be seen again by a wave.

On Sunday the Whitby Sea Anglers fished the annual Ship Inn Open match which also counted as their club match. Calm conditions meant the going was tough in this cod only match but anglers still managed to find the odd fish. Phil Mead had a great day and came in first in the Whitby club match with a fine cod of 9 pounds 6 ounces. Dave Perret took second with a codling of 1 pounds 15 ounces. Glenn Kilpatrick finished third with his codling of 1 pounds 9 ounces - Glenn also caught a ling of approximately 4 pounds which unfortunately he could not weigh in due to the cod only rule. Ling are very rare from the shore and this was possibly the first to be caught in the Whitby fishing club.

Results : 1st P Mead 9 pounds 6 ounces, 2nd D Perett 1-15(1), 3rd G Kilpatrick 1-9(1), P Kilpatrick 1-8(1), R Allison 1-6(1).

A moderate north westerly sea swell provided good conditions for the Whitby sea anglers first match of 2007. The match was fished on an ebb to low water tide which can be very productive at this time of year. Berado Vasey had a fantastic nights fishing finding 4 cod for 15 pounds 4 ounces the biggest of which weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces. Bernado's bag and biggest fish set the pace in the clubs heaviest bag and fish competition for the month of January. Brian Harland took second place on the night with 2 fine cod for 10 pounds 3 ounces. Rob Allison finished 3rd with 3 cod for 7 pounds 11 ounces.

St Mary's fishing club matches

Brian Miller caught a cracking 7lb 8.5oz cod in the St Mary's match - but it wasn't enough to earn a top three spot and he lost a bigger one.

The drama unfolded at Runswick beach where he caught the biggest cod of the match but lost the better one when his line parted after a 15-minute battle.

Paul Lobley won with seven codling for 14lb 12.5oz from Port Mulgrave, in a match fished by 18, with seven weighing in a total of 20 codling.

Terry Dalton was runner-up with four codling for 12lb 12oz from Runswick, while Darren Dalton caught four for 10lb 15.5oz from Port Mulgrave.

I had 7 for 14lb odd mate, nowt like the stamp of fish you had Sunday mate, i only had one good fish 5.5lb the rest were mops, but, which im sick of saying now, i lost an absolute monster.
i was reading a post about the filey lads ,about a massive fish keeps getting the better of more than one angler or something, this has me thinking, that maybe i have hooked the same fish twice down port, the one that nearly took my eye out when the real handle snapped off, i just dont know, but what i do know is that i lost something special sunday night, i've had doubles down there, this was a real pig with fins, :'(i miss my TTR)

Paul Lobley Wins The Hornsea Open 2007

Fished the hornsea open 2 day and had a 7lb 7oz cod, which won me the match, i fished the same place i fished over x-mas pleasure fishing with chopper(kelpster), when i got a six pounder, so i thought mite as well go back to same spot, could'nt believe my luck when the exact same spot, with 200 plus angler's fishing, was up for grabs, after 2 crack off's, i was well cheesed, nomatter what i tried , nowt, so when our lass pulled in a slug, which sadly she couldnt weigh in, i thought i would scale my hooks down from a 6/0 - 4/0 "bloke in red overalls" pennel spesh to a 2/0 long pennel

Tope At Bempton Cliffs ??

In a recent Post to the Whitby fishing forum. North East Sea Angler Ray Maddison claims to have hooked into something rather large from the top of Bempton cliffs. With tope being on the increase in the north east on the Yorkshire coast perhaps this is what it was ?

While fishing down Bempton during one of the rock anglers summer matches last year I hooked into a fish which I believed at the time to be a Billet. After winding only a few turns my rod lurched over and I had to quickly press the release button on my reel to prevent the line from breaking. The fish sped off at breakneck speed much to the disappointment of my thumb! Suddenly it stopped and I even managed to move it back towards myself about 15yd. Once again it sped off, taking my line off down to the backing. I had no choice but to engage my reel and my line snapped like cotton. I can only assume that it was maybe a Tope. I know after talking to Chris Scaife he was catching them from his boat around that area at the time. It wasn,t a seal, the water was like a mill pond with thousands of birds lolling around, there's no way I could not have seen it had it surfaced. Has anyone else had any similar experience.

Paper is probably best if your going to use them. Trays of water in the fridge is a good way to prolong the life of any worm but I think it subtracts from their quality.



Some of the lads I know keep them in buckets of sand. I'm currently experimenting with trays of sand in my tank. Ill let you know how they come on.

I think the blacks may be lost mate (or is this age of politically correctness and awareness of a multitude of cultures perhaps we should call them worms from an ethnic minority). As your aware they are tempremental little buggers and will struggle to resettle. Best to go in water when you get them and change it daily with water of the same temp. Always beware when keeping them in water of the waters salinity. I once put all my whites in water to find them dead the next day. When I checked the water salinity it was the same as tap water, I had taken it from too near the outlet of a stream.

Report From Martyn Wilding

Flushed with Friday's success, I opted to try for a piggy yesterday - went to Cloughton in search of a cod of the Ramrod stamp, but finished up with a few Kirpatrick-esque antics.

Arrived about 8pm, conditions looked good in the back of the wyke - nice swells rolling in, but good black water. Got a 3lber first cast, followed by a mop next cast - put both back. then as I was rebaiting, I turned round just in time to see the massive swell that swamped me!! Didn't have my waterproof on at the time, so whole of my left side got soaked, including what must have been a gallon down the chesties. Rod got swilled up the beach, rest went down the beach & bag fortunately stayed where it was - oddly enough when wave went back I found that in blind panic I'd held onto only my bucket, which contained virtually nothing of value!!

Retrieved my rod just as a second swell did similarly, & had just about given the rest up as lost, but fortunately it'd lodged amongst some rocks!! Only thing missing was my bucket lid (which washed back up 5 mins later).

After that, my dampened enthusiasm only lasted for another 2 or 3 casts, & this plus no more bites meant I packed up around 930. Should really have stayed for the ebb, but clothes were showing no signs of draining!! Couple of good things was it wasn't too cold, & that neoprene socks have proved that they're probably the best thing since sliced bread - although my left leg/ foot were soaked though, & I could feel water squelching about in the boot, my foot never felt wet or cold!! My sock was saturated, though!!

Probably going back out tonight - hope the session's a bit longer & dryer than last nights!!

In a recent outing to Robin Hoods Bay Scarborough Rock Angler Martyn Wilding caught 11 codling for 28 pounds to win his local Cloughton club Friday evening competition.

Martyn Says

Just back in from a good session at one of my favourite marks in RHB - started at 6pm & by 830pm had 10 codlings in the bag, plus another undersized went back, plus several good bites not converted.

Had to vacate the mark, leaving fish, as was in danger of getting cut off - went to another mark, but only 1 more codling came my way - did lose a couple more, though.

Weighed in for weekly club match, 11 codlings for 28lb - my best of the winter.

After running an external forum for about a year I finally added a forum onto the Whitby sea anglers domain at http://www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk/forum/index.php. Ship Inn Open 2007

In yesterdays Ship Inn Open match I caught a ling of all things from the shore. Unfortunately the match was a cod only competition so although the catch was significant for myself (my first ever shore ling) I returned the 4 pound fish to fight another day. On my last cast of the day I managed a small codling just short of 2 pounds which won me £50 for my efforts. There were 2 good sized fish brought to the scales in this match. Whitby club angler Phil Mead got his best of the season and came in second with a cod of 9 pounds 6 ounces. Scarborough angler Ray Maddison who seems to make a habbit of locating the big fish in these matches went one better and won the match with a cod of just over 10 pounds.

Recreational sea angling strategy - good or bad news for the reasons sea anglers ?

Well the first draft of the recreational sea anglers strategy has been published and controversy over the document has ensued. Many anglers see this document as beneficial for the sea anglers of our country. However many including myself think that quite the opposite is true. I believe that the rsa strategy could potentially be damaging to sea angling.

Within the sea anglers strategy measures of control over angling are discussed and these include the possible introduction of a sea angling licence and restrictions on anglers catches through bag limits. With little or no evidence available of bag limits having a conservationist effect on fish stocks and the potential impact such measures could have on the uk's charter fleets and angling this measure I feel should be campaigned against and removed from the sea anglers strategy.

Another Double

After many years of Cod fishing on the Yorkshire coast I caught my first double figure cod back in Nov 2003. The fish weighed 14 pounds 8 ounces and was part of a 5 fish haul for 30 pounds exactly. I remember the night well (how could I forget it) and remember loosing another fish of similar size right at my feet on the same night. There was a huge south easterly swell running into Runswick bay and the water was the colour of chocolate. I missed several bites and half of the 4 hour match had gone before I got the first fish of about 5 pounds in weight, then on the next cast a felt a slight tap and I wound down hoping it was another bite. After a few seconds the rod lunged forward and when I hit it I knew it was the fish I'd been waiting for for all those years. I remmber how good it felt to see the scales at the weigh in go around to 14 pounds and I remmber hardly sleeping a wink with excitement that night.

Well 3 years later I hooked another. Not quite as big at 10 pounds 4 ounces but it still felt great. This time from Robin hoods bay but the sea direction was the same again although not quite as big. A south easterly with chocolate coloured water seems to be luck for me. Hopefully I'll get around to scanning the picture in soon. A fantastic fish that thought hard all the way to my feet, and again just like last time I lost another decent 1 on the next cast. Perhaps it is true what people say about double figure fish swimming together.

Sunday 17th December 2006 - Christmas Match

Sunday saw the members of the Whitby fishing club head out for their annual Christmas match between 2 and 7 pm. Anglers fished a light north westerly swell on a small ebbing tide with heavily coloured water in places. Eighteen anglers returned to the scales with a mixture of cod, whitings, flounders and rockling. William Atkinson was this years Christmas champion with 2 fine cod for 14 pounds 12 ounces. Within this match second place always goes to the angler with the heaviest single fish which this year was Colin Stainthorpe with a fine cod of 5 pounds 14 ounces. After the match all the anglers went to the fleece public house where all entrants of the match received a prize and a free Christmas meal. Gale forced south westerly winds again made the going difficult for the members of the Whitby Fishing club in their 3 hour mid week match fished on a small flood to high tide. Andy Craig had his first win since rejoining the club after several years away. Andy's bag of 8 whiting and 2 flounders weighing 5 pounds 10 ounces gave him joint first with Glenn Kilpatrick who had 9 whiting for the same weight. In third place on the night was Phil Mead with 7 whitings for 4 pounds 7 ounces.

Sunday saw the members of the Whitby sea angling club fish the annual Cloughton Open match which was also the club match for this weekend. A slight north westerly swell and coloured water at most marks gave good conditions in this small low tide match. The winner was Cloughton's Alec Bayes with a cod of 5 pounds 12 ounces. Alec who is the Cloughton club's longest serving club member won £300. Second place went to Whitby club member Dennis Thompson with a cod of 5 pounds 3 ounces. Scarborough Matt Hillaby took 3rd with a cod of 4 pounds 12 ounces. The prize for the heaviest bag of codlings went to Scarborough angler Ray Maddison who caught 4 cod for 9 pounds 14 ounces.

With the prevailing weather still coming from the south west the conditions for sea fishing on the east coast remain less than perfect. Despite this whenever there has been a bit of swell there has been some good fishing as Dave Perett proved in Wednsday's ebb tide match. Dave managed to locate a venue where a slight long distance northerly sea swell was stirring the bottom which helped him catch 3 fish for 11 pounds 2 ounces, the biggest of which was a fine cod of 8 pounds 15 ounces. Glenn Kilpatrick came second with 16 whiting for 10 pounds 4 ounces. Bernado Vasey found a couple of decent sized codling for 5 pounds 13 ounces which gave him third place on the night.

A storm forced south westerly wind made conditions difficult for the Whitby sea anglers as they turned out to fish their 4 hour Sunday night match over low water. A slight south easterly swell and heavily coloured water gave better prospects on the cod front and this was shown in the results with catches being up on the past few weeks. Glenn Kilpatrick had a good night weighing in 5 fish for 19 pounds 4 ounces the biggest of which was a fine cod of 10 pounds 4 ounces. Glenn's bag and fish now lead the way in the club competitions for the heaviest fish and bag for both the month of December and for the season. Paul Kilpatrick came in second on the night with 3 fish for 10 pounds 10 ounces, Paul also had a decent fish of 6 pounds 1 ounces. Brian Harland completed the places on the night with 5 fish for 8 pounds 8 ounces.

The autumn storms and northerly swells from the start of the month now seem like an age ago. South or south westerly winds bringing calm seas seem to be dominating the weather at the moment and this means the chances of catching codling are few and far between. In Wednesday nights match the majority of anglers headed to the beaches in search of whiting and flounders, only Paul Kilpatrick managed to find a codling from the rocks. Glenn Kilpatrick won this match with 20 whitings for 12 pounds 12 ounces. Brian Harland caught 5 whiting and a flounder to take third place with 3 pounds 15 ounces. In third place was Mike Breckon with 5 whitings for 3 pounds 13 ounces.

Sunday 26th November 2006 - Whitby Open

Sunday saw the Whitby Sea Anglers Association hold their annual open match between 10am and 4pm. With flat calm seas and bright sunlight, conditions were poor for codling fishing. Eighty Anglers fished and only 12 returned to the scales with fish.

In the senior section which was a cod only match the day belonged to Mick Chadwick of Scarborough who managed to land 5 codling's for a total weight of 8 pounds 7 ounces earning him a cheque for £400. In second place was Whitby angler Norman Brittain whose single fish of 4 pounds 9 ounces earnt him £200 plus an extra 50 pounds for the heaviest fish superpool. Philip France of Scarborough found 3 codlings weighing a total of 4 pounds 1.5ounces and took the cheque of £125 for third place.

The junior's competition was an any fish match with codling taking preference. Dave Smith won this section and had an excellent day landing the biggest fish in both matches. Dan's codling of 7 pounds 11 ounces earnt him a cheque for £50 and also takes the lead in the junior's biggest fish for the season competition. In second place was 6 year old Chris Mcarthy whose 1 pounds 4 ounce flounder won him a cheque for £30. Dan Craig took 3rd place with 1 whiting weighing 1 pounds 0 ounces earning him a cheque for £20

A slight to moderate sea swell gave good conditions in this 3 hour ebb tide match. Dave Perett continued his excellent recent form finding 7 fish for 17 pounds 9 ounces. Dave's biggest fish of the 7 weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces and is now the heaviest fish for November and the season. Phil Mead came in second on the night with 3 fish for 8 pounds 2 ounces and Paul Kilpatrick took third with a solitary fish of 6 pounds 5 ounces.

Gale forced southerly winds and driving rain made the going tough for the Whitby sea anglers in their 4 hour Sunday night match fished over low water. A slight North easterly sea swell gave good conditions for codling fishing and only the extreme weather kept catches down. Malcolm Pitman caught his first cod in the club this year and came in first with 2 fish for 6 pounds 5 ounces. Mike Breckon continues to find the better sized whiting and returned to the scales with 4 whiting and a billet for 5 pounds 5 ounces. Colin Stainthorpe found 2 decent codling and weighed in a total of 5 pounds to finish the night in third place.

On a flat calm night with one of the smallest tides of the year hopes of catching codling were extremely low and most anglers again headed to the piers and beaches in search of Whiting. The poor conditions did not deter Dennis Thompson who persevered on the rocks and not only found 1 codling but caught a total of four and 1 rockling to take first place on the night with a weight of 6 pounds 2 ounces. Second place on the night went to Dan Mcarthy who weighed in 5 whiting for 2 pounds 5 ounces. Brian Harland with 4 whiting for 2 pounds 8 ounces took third place.

Monday 13th November

Monday Night saw many of the club anglers out pleasure fishing in search of that one big fish to take the lead in the clubs competition for the heaviest fish outside of a club match. Glenn Kilpatrick managed 6 fish but nothing quite big enough to take over the lead from Mike Vasey. However Colin Stainthorpe managed a fish of 8 pounds 5 ounces which now leads the way in this competition.

A dieing north westerly sea swell gave good conditions for this 4 hour high water match. Catches were excellent with the cod appearing to be in abundance at most marks. Dave Perret's bag of 10 cod weighing 18 pounds not only won the match but takes the lead in the heaviest bag of fish competition, both for the season and the month of November. Second place on the night went to Glenn Kilpatrick with 8 fish for 17 pounds 5 ounces. In third was Rob Allison with 5 fish for 12 pounds 15 ounces.

Whilst pleasure fishing tonight Mike Vasey landed the heaviest fish outside of a club match to date. Mike's cod weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and was officially weighed by Bernado Vasey. Mike is four times winner of the club competition to catch the biggest fish outside of a club match, and if he makes it 5 the trophy could be renamed the Mike Vasey Big Cod Trophy. Past winners of this event include : John Butler with fish to 16 pounds, Colin Stainthorpe, Dennis Thompson and Glenn Kilpatrick. To enter the event club anglers simply need to catch a fish and have it weighed on the club scales and witnessed by a club member, or have the fish weighed in one of the tackle shops.

Calm seas on a still night with an ebbing tide gave poor conditions for codling fishing, However those who persevered on the rocks were pleasantly surprised and 4 of the club members : Colin Stainthorpe, William Atkinson, Rob Allison and Dennis Thompson all managed to catch a small codling each despite the poor conditions. A lot of anglers headed to the beaches and piers in search of Whiting. Glenn Kilpatrick took first place overall with his catch of 14 whitings for 8 pounds 12 ounces, second place went to Charlie Breckon with 8 whitings and 2 dabs for 7 pounds 0 ounces. Brian Harland was third with 7 whitings for 4 pounds 6 ounces.

Philip Mead landed his third cod of the season to win this ebb tide to low water match. Philip hooked his 4-4 ounces cod on his first cast of the night and went on to win his second match of the season. Fishing at the same venue, Paul Kilpatrick caught 2 codling and a rockling for second place. Andrew Cass came in third with 2 whiting and an eel for 2 pounds 12 ounces.

A stormy autumn night greeted the Whitby sea anglers as they headed out to fish this low water to flood tide match. The sea was extremely rough meaning a lot of the usual fishing marks were un fishable and this was reflected in the results with only 8 of the clubs members returning to the scales with fish. Glenn Kilpatrick took first place with 5 fish for 11 pounds 7 ounces, the biggest being a cod of 5 pounds 8 ounces which gets the ball rolling in the heaviest fish competition for November. Mike Vasey found 2 fish for 6 pounds 3 ounces and finally managed to beat his fishing buddy Brian Harland who came in 3rd with 2 fish for 6 pounds 2 ounces.
