Whitby Fishing Trips

Whitby Fishing Boats

There are currently 15 boats within the Whitby Charter skippers association licenced to take sea fishing trips from the port. So if its a days fishing on the distant wrecks in deep water for the big cod and ling, 10 hours uptiding, a days shark and tope fishing or just a few hours at sea then your spoilt for choice at Whitby.
My advice to anyone wanting to book a fishing trip is to take a look around at the skippers websites, or contact the skippers direct and see what is on offer. These are the contact details I currently have for the whitby charter fishing boats that take out fishing parties from Whitby. Information on all the boats can be viewed at www.wcsa.co.uk

Whitby Porbeagle

Whitby Shark Fishing - Shark Fishing at Whitby - North Sea Shark Fishing shy torque and sea spray

Hi,

Ive just recieved this press release from Save our Sharks,It details the recent capture of a porbeagle shark from Whitby Charter boat Sea Spray chartered by Malcolm pitman. For anyone interested in Shark Fishing at Whitby it makes an interesting read. Hope you all enjoy it and are getting your hooks sharpened ready for a day fishing for shark at Whitby

Press Release 29 July 2006
For Immediate Release

Save Our Sarks
http://www.save-our-sharks.org

Save Our Sharks Kick Starts Recreational Shark Fishery in North East England

The potential for a new recreational shark fishery in the North East of England has been confirmed by Save Our Sharks (SOS) with the targeted capture of a porbeagle shark by a group of anglers fishing out of Whitby during the three days starting on Wednesday 26th July 2006.

Regional SOS organiser Dave Morton arranged for a group of anglers to fish for porbeagle sharks, just off the North Eastern coast, following a period of intense investigation and preparation in collaboration with local angling charter boat skipper Malcolm Pitman who skippers Whitby’s angling boat Sea Spray.

The initial group involved in the capture of the porbeagle consisted of Dave and Malcolm and included Dr Nigel Proctor of the National Federation of Sea Anglers Conservation Group, Leon Roskilly of the Sea Anglers Conservation Network and Norman Berry, editor of Sea Angling News who was the member of the group who hooked into the six foot long porbeagle.

The shark was bought aboard the boat so that measurements could be taken and the fish was tagged before being released unharmed back into the sea, to help gather important information about the species that could potentially prove a money spinner for the North East as recreational sea anglers flock from across Europe for the chance of landing and releasing one of the largest predatory fish to be found in UK waters.

SOS’s Dave Morton said ‘The days when shark were regarded as evil killing machines to be wantonly destroyed are fast ending as ecologists understand more of the vital contribution these top predators make towards maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem, and the social and economic value of the catch and release shark fishery is realised’.

‘A shark is too valuable a creature to be caught just once’

As well as the fish boated, another was seen close by the boat on the previous day, and shortly after the capture Dave Morton hooked into another possibly bigger fish which was lost when the fish managed to rub the line ahead of the 30ft 250lb rubbing leader.

With some other baits coming back badly mauled, and dropped runs, possibly from tope, a smaller member of the shark family, the potential for a recreational shark fishery off of Whitby seems to be huge.
Following the successful exploratory trip, another is planned for the near future and Malcolm Pitman is offering a 10% discount on future shark fishing trips for members of Save Our Sharks.

Notes for Editors

Save Our Sharks is an angling organisation that is primarily concerned with the conservation of shark and ray species within UK coastal waters, and the development of recreational catch and release fisheries for shark and rays, believing that the huge economic potential of such fisheries will ensure that the species are valued much more highly than is currently the case, leading to increased conservation measures that will ensure their continued survival as an ecologically important species.

Porbeagle shark are a harmless species of shark found in temperate waters growing to 600 lbs and measuring up to 10 feet. As a top predator, they are essential for maintaining a healthy natural balance within the overall marine ecology, benefiting both recreational and commercial fisheries for other species.

Further information about porbeagle sharks can be found on the Shark Trust website at:

Ive had Malcolm Pitman the skipper of sea spray on the phone tonight and he informs me that they have had a Porbagle shark on the boat today. Malcolm told me to keep it quiet untill the lads on the boat have published the story but it appears from viewing the forums tonight that the news is already out before they have even got home.
The lads, members of save our sharks and anglers net forums have been in whitby shark fishing with malcolm all week and thought that they had drawn a blank but today turned out to be the day with 1Whitby porbeagle shark landed severel more snapping the line and 6 missed Whitby tope runs.
As soon as I have the pictures and have published them to Malcolms website I will place them here within this blog.
Looks like Whitby is now getting a reputation for big shark fishing. I might have to tie a couple of 50 o pennel rigs and head on out.

There has also been a shark caught on Saturday on Rich wards boat shy torque whitby

Whitby Gazette read my blog

whitby sunset cruise eskbelle dolphinsI was shocked earlier this week when I recieved an email from Mary Levey at the Whitby Gazette saying that she had read my article on Dolphins seen on the eskbelle sunset cruise. Mary asked if I minded if she took some quotes from the blog as the Whitby gazette were to do an article on the the Eskbelle sunset cruise and the dolphins. Tope Consultation from DEFRA

Today I received an invite to offer thoughts on the Latest DEFRA consultation - this one being about tope. In the North east the tope are now protected by the NESFC bylaw forbidding the landing of tope or parts of (eg fins) caught within the area of NESFC's jurisdiction. If my understanding of the situation is correct this consultation is about banning fishing for tope in all waters surrounding the Brittish Isles.
My Initial thoughts are that this is brilliant news. Its would be one more species safe from commercial exploitation, safe from the greed that seems inherent amongst commercial fishermen.
The consultation offers 3 proposals
  1. Do nothing;
  2. Only allow fishing for tope by rod and line but prohibit the retention, transhipment and landing of tope caught by any method;
  3. Prohibit all fishing for, retention on board, transhipment and landing of tope.
I think I will be writing to endorse the second of these 3 options.

This is the email I recieved from DEFRA. If anyone reading this has any thoughts on the issue please feel free to make contact either through the comments section of this blog or via the whitby sea anglers fishing club email address which you can find at www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk.

Dear Consultee

Consultation on managing the exploitation of tope

I am writing to consult you on proposals aimed at preventing the development of a targeted commercial fishery for tope in order to protect tope stocks.

Tope are large coastal sharks that can live for over 50 years. They do not mature until around 12 years old and then produce a relatively low number of pups (20 every 2-3 years) compared with other marine species, so there are vulnerable to fishing pressure. It is therefore likely that a targeted fishery would be unsustainable.

At present there is no targeted fishery, but tope are caught as bycatch. Last year we received reports that a commercial fishing operation for tope in British waters was being considered and although this did not materialise the UK Fisheries Minister, Ben Bradshaw, considers we should consult on measures to prevent the unsustainable exploitation of tope in the future on the basis of the precautionary approach.

The enclosed combined consultation paper and partial regulatory impact assessment sets out three possible options:
1) do nothing;
2) only allow fishing for tope by rod and line but prohibit the retention, transhipment and landing of tope caught by any method;
3) prohibit all fishing for, retention on board, transhipment and landing of tope.

Recreational sea anglers fishing from the shore will not be affected by these measures.

Within the consultation document we also ask specific questions (in bold) about commercial fishing operations and recreational sea anglers and the benefits of tope to each sector to try to better assess the affects of the proposals.

The consultation documents and full list of consultees can be found at: http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/current.htm

We welcome your comments on the proposals and also ask that you provide as much information as possible on the impacts of the proposals, both positive and negative, to you and your business. Please send your comments in writing to Patrick Cotter at the address on this letter or e-mail them to: tope@DEFRA.GSI.GOV.UK by Friday 20th October.

In line with Defra's policy of openness, at the end of the consultation period copies of the responses we receive may be made publicly available through the Defra Information Resource Centre, Lower Ground Floor, Ergon House, Horseferry Road, London SW1P 2AL. The information they contain may also be published in a summary of responses. If you do not consent to this, you must clearly request that your response be treated confidentially. Any confidentiality disclaimer generated by your IT system in e-mail responses will not be treated as such a request. You should also be aware that there may be circumstances in which Defra will be required to communicate information to third parties on request, in order to comply with its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations.

The Information Resource Centre will supply copies of consultation responses to personal callers or in response to telephone or e-mail requests (tel: 020 7238 6575, e-mail: defra.library@defra.gsi.gov.uk). Wherever possible, personal callers should give the library at least 24 hours' notice of their requirements. An administrative charge will be made to cover photocopying and postage costs.

If you have any complaints about the way in which the consultation process has been run, you should direct them to Liz Ambekar, Defra’s Consultation Co-ordinator, Area 7C Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR.

Yours faithfully

Crab Bye law thrown out

I have been speaking to Nigel Procter, the angling rep on the local NESFC, in the fleece at tea time and he was pleased to tell me that the part of the bye law regarding the collection of crabs by anglers from the shore has been removed from the bye law. Nigel who is in Whitby with some friends fishing for shark and tope aboard Malcolm Pitman's boat sea spray said he was pleased with the outcome of yestrdays meeting with nesfc.

I guess this just goes to show how much people like Nigel do on our behalves without us ever knowing. If we didnt have such people on the sea fisheries committees bye laws such as these could easily pass unoticed by anglers untill we get our collar felt for collecting or beloved peelers.

Big Pollock for local fireman

The big pollock on the Whitby Wrecks are becoming a more frequent site these days. Sea otter skipper Paul Kilpatrick attributes this to the new method of fishing with shads.

This a photo of local angler Chris Raine out on sea otter 2 today July 24th 2006.

This pollock weiged just under 15lb - a cracking fish which fell to a blue shad. It was caught on a wreck at 18 miles along with plenty of cod up to 10lb.

Chris is a part-time fireman and was out with local area firebrigade lads on there maiden trip on sea otter 2 they weren't disapointed.

Whitby sea anglers website

I have been very busy over the past couple of months updating the whitby sea anglers fishing club website. Ive been busy learning some new skills which includes a php include command for the menu which lets you have 1 easy to update menu file which is then automatically placed on each page of the website. This saves you from the task of having to make any changes to the menu on each page right across the site.
Ive also added a php picture rotator to the header image so now on each vivit to the site you should see a new picture at the top of the site. Thanks goes to Martyn wilding for some of the interesting pictures that appear on the site header.
Amongst recent additions to the site is a new area for north east fishing news. This is a page of regularly updated news snippets I find whilst search the internets various forums and article sites. Each news item gives a brief insite into the story and ends with a link to the page where you can read the article in full. The earliest additions to the north east fishing news page include :

  1. Ravenscar Steel and Blea wyke directions.
  2. Pendulum Casting - John Ward 3rd after 2 years away
  3. Saltburn Results - Lobley Still Top Dog
  4. 83rd Filey Angling/Fishing Festival
  5. Cowbar Jetty - Bernard Westgarth
  6. Whitby Angling Festival
As well as the long running whitby sea anglers gellery I have now added 2 new galleries to the site , The friends of whitby sea anglers gallery allows anglers to send pictures to me which I will then add to the gallery. Pictures within this gallery to date include cod from the yorkshire coast, holderness bass tope smoothhound and mackerel. The second gallery is a direct picture upload gallery which lets anglers upload fishing picture directly into the gallery for other members to view. This gallery is proving rather successsful with over 100 people viewing the gallery in the few months it has been running.

The north east fishing / angling match calendar has also been updated with information for all the north east fishing open matches etc including the Filey and scarborough anglin / fishing festivals. If you have any details that arent already on our open match calendar please feel free to email me to have them added.

We have also added a page detailing the fishing tackle shops in the Whitby area. The page includes contact details for both whitby angling supplies and rods and reels. There are also details of tackle shops at Scarborugh, filey and Bridlington.

For those intersted in locating new fishing marks I have added details of a few fishing marks in the Whitby area including those at Blea wyke and peek steel at Ravenscar.

The reason I have been so busy with the site of late is that I want to try get it to as high a position in google as possible so that more people view our site and learn about sea fishing in Whitby. I have recently been spending a lot of time reading information on search engine optimization which suggests that consistantly updating your website with quality information from your chosen field is the way to get more visitors to view your site and tell their friends. If anyone reads this and is able to help spread the word it would be greatly appreciated if you could add the links for the whitby sea fishing club which is www.whitbyseaanglers.co.uk to as many websites as possible.

If you have any ideas for improvements to our site, articles you would like to see included or pics you would like to see added to the galleries please email me from the email address available from the contact section of the whitby sea anglers website.

Chieftain Charters Whitby boat fishing trip - lots of cod - What a fantastic trip

The trip started on the 23 june 2006 Boarding the Chieftain charter boat At Whitby.

Chieftain / Cheiftain charters fishing trip. The boat left the pier ends at exactly 1pm steaming out to a wreck. we
finally reached the chosen wreck at 6am the following day (thats right 17
hours travelling) John Brennan the skipper had told us that we were 155 miles from
whitby and told us right o lads down you go.
So down all 12 anglers went to the bottom (not very deep either) only about
40 metres! I can't vouch for the rest of the anglers but i only got to the
bottom and was just about to start jigging and the rod bent over and over
and over and over!!!!I thought i'd got a decent fish on but when i got it
to the surface it turned out to be 4 big whitby cod - 37 pound in total!!! what was
happening was that the first fish was taking the pirk starting a frenzy with
the other fish and they followed suit with the muppetts!!!! I was too
busy to be looking around at everybody elses but every time i looked around
on my way back down to the bottom there were fish coming up either side of
me, and so it went on for about 2 hours until a ling came aboard, we gave it
one more drift after that and moved on to another wreck and it all began
again!!!! 10 - 15 - 20 pounders coming aboard and the biggest that I saw
was a 24 pounder by a barnsley lad on the back of the boat. our fishing
team had several 10lbers (2+3 a drop) 15s and 20s also. we ended up doing
about 40 stone of fillets between our team of for lads (which roughly
equates to around 80 stone of cod on the bone. It really was a top days angling aboard the Whitby charter boat Chieftain. I would recommend the boat to anyone who reads this.

Best year for a long time for charter fishing trips from Whitby

I've read a few times on the internet forums over the past couple of weeks of anglers taking good catches form the Whitby charter boat fishing trips. Today I read one on WSF forum about Paul Kilpatrick's boats sea otter 2. The story was of a great days fishing with pictures of every box on the boat full of fish.
I phoned Paul earlier tonight and he confirmed they had been having some truely fantastic fishing over the past 2 weeks. Paul even went on to mention the words cod recovery and said the fishing was better than for a long time. It is thought that this is a result of fewer boats and less pair trawlers now working the grounds around Whitby.

These are the pictures taken with Pauls permission from wsf forums and illustrate the quality of the fishing on the Whitby Charter boats this year.

Whitby boat fishing - Porbeagle Sharks and tope are the latest target of the Whitby Charter fleets fishing trips.

"Shark fishing at Whitby" "Whitby Shark Fishing" "lets go sharking with Rich" "whitby sharks". These are the new words on the lips of anglers taking fishing trips from Whitby.

Whitby has long been famous for its huge catches of cod in numbers, and massive single record breaking cod. Those fish are still here and caught regulally in abundance by all the charter boats taking fishing trips from the port. However On August the 16th 2005 boat angling in Whitby took a major new direction. Local skipper Richard Ward had long wanted to target diverse and uncommon species from his charter boat Shytorque. Throughout 2004 and 2005 Rich had noticed the presence of sharks on the fishing grounds off Whitby and during the whitby angling festival in July 2005 Richard had actually managed to hook into his first porbeagle shark, but without the correct gear and strong line the fight had lasted only a matter of seconds whith Richard the loser..... On this occasion.

Steve Clay ( Sept 2004 Festival winner )had been onboard shytorque and witnessed Rich's encounter with the porbeagle shark, he later passed word around a few of his fishing buddies and they decided to contact rich and arrange the first ever recreational charter trip out of Whitby for shark. Steves mate Rupert Drury headed uip the operation and he started to gather as much info on angling for Porbeagle sharks as he could. Reams of paper with textbook type tactics began to arrive through the post at Richards home address and Rich soon realised the lads were serious and the dream could indeed soon become reality.

Perfect weather allowed Rupert and the guys to make their first Whitby Sharking trip on Aug 16th. The day started with makeral fishing for bait and after a short period the lads had a box full of fresh macky and headed out to the sharking grounds

The chum bucket full of ground bait was sent down with the anchor and the lads fished hard all day with Mackerel flappers on big hooks. It was about 6 hours before anything happened and then one of the rods gave the tell tale sign of a big fish and the line began to spin off the reel at a rate of knots. After a long fight the lads were suprised to see a tope of roughly 30 lbs come to the side of the boat. Catch and release was practiced and the tope, another first for Whitby charter boats returned to fight another day, perhaps they will catch it again when its doubled in weight?

Rupert was the next to encounter something different. Whilst they were waiting, they had all been fishing for mackerel to keep the chum stocks healthy. He dropped down to 10m with his mackerel trace and something either took hold or he foul-hooked something big. Whatever it was took off straight down and straightened one of his hooks out. We all looked at each other and began to wonder if there really was something bigger lurking around.

10 minutes later Ruperts rod bent over and line began to screem off the reel. After 45 minutes of wondering what was on the end of the line Rupert was totally exhausted, but so was the fish and the lads were totally gobsmacked to see what came to the surface - Whitby's first porbeagle shark. The lads on the boat all helped get the fish out the water by the appropriated method and it was measured before being returned alive and well.

The lads then returned to shore, and the story of Whitby's first shark spread far and wide. The measurements of the shark were submitted to the UK Shark Tagging Programme and they have verified that the fish was 248lbs.

To date no-one else has managed to land another porbaegle at Whitby but the boats have now started to have sightings of the sharks off Whitby yet again and today sees Richard out on another sharking trip hoping to repeat the happening of a year ago.

Sunset and dolphins at Whitby on the Eskbelle sunset cruise

Well this one isn't fishing but it was such a great evening I had to put it in the blog.

Ive always fancied doing the sunset cruise from Whitby upto sandsend but have always struggled to get our lass to come along (fixed goggle eyed on that crap big brother on the box). Finally after hinting for a few years I finally got her to come tonight with the kids. Well it was absolutely amazing to say the least. We sailed at 8.45 and headed down to Sandsend which is about 3 mile from Whitby. We stayed close to the shore all the way down and at times were in stone throwing distance of land. We saw the salmon netters and anglers on the beach and as we headed toward Sandsend corner we watched the sun set over the cliffs. Then we headed out past sandsend ness end and amazingly watched the sun set for a second time , this time into the sea - it was stunning. As we headed back towards Whitby the skipper informed us that there was a school of Dolphins about 500 yards in front. At first I wasnt too bothered as I thought they couldnt possibly be dolphins so close to shore, infact my experience suggested they were boring old porpoise. Then we got closer and they started leaping out the water. There must have been 30 or 40 of them with young swimming around the boat and at times leaping out of the water - they were definately dolphins, the skipper of the boat explained that when they jump as they were doing they would be rounding up the mackerel and herring shoals. It was the most amazing thing Ive seen at Whitby for many years. Even our lass was amazed and the kids loved it.

I took a few picks but unfortunately didnt get any good ones of the dolphins as the camera diesnt seem to snap instantly. If anyone ever visits Whitby and gets chance to go on the eskbelle sunset cruise I would thoroughly reccommend it.

Whitby fishing trips - Sea Otter 2 Paul Kilpatrick's July Update

Fishing has been excellent to date in July. In the first couple of weeks we have had ling to 20 lb and many many cod well into double figures. In the Whitby angling festival, sea otter regular Nick Ball from Rotherham had this great ling of 20 lbs whilst fishing the wrecks with mackerel which has to be one of the best methods for catching the bigger ling and cod off Whitby. We have also had lots of cod in the 10 pound area and on some days our anglers have had 30 fish each with best methods being shads and jelly worms, although the old traditional 1 pound jiggers have started to take some good cod again recently.

Today 17/072006 we have been doing exceptionally well on the wrecks and reefs around the 3 mile mark. Most anglers took a box of cod each and we once again had cod and Pollock well into double figures.

Paul Kilpatricks Sea otter 2 fishing update for Whitby - June 2006

JUNE 2006 - June once again has proved it is the month when pirking really starts to take cod in a big way the big sprats shoals are now well and truly here the rough ground is producing stacks of cod at times on pirks but a lot of anglers now seem to prefer fishing with shads over wrecks and rough ground to take cod and Pollock this method of fishing with the light gear saves on the arms at the end of the day.
The mackerel shoals have arrived in vast numbers with a ready supply of bait for chance to catch a big ling. For more information on sea otter 2 visit pauls website www.sea-otter2.co.uk

Whitby sea fishing trips - Are the best catches over the horizon or close to shore ?

Many Wreck and reef boat anglers who come to Whitby on fishing trips often have the idea that you have to head off far out to see with 80lb class rods, huge pirks and lines of heavy breaking strain to catch the cod, ling, bass, haddock and other species from Whitby. For far too long this misconception has been banded about. In my opinion and that of many of the Whitby boat anglers some of the best fishing at Whitby can still be had on the inshore wrecks and reefs with light rods and line using shads, jelly worms, hockeyes, peeler crab, worm, squid and mussel.Often the very best catches come only a couple of miles from Shore. In recent times my good friend Paul Kilpatrick skipper of Sea otter 2 at Whitby has reported anglers on his boat hooking into huge fish whilst uptiding only 500 yards from the shore at Saltwick. In the recent summer angling Festival, Angler Dave Perett won the event with a 22 pound cod caught no more than 2 miles from land.
If you watch the local commercial fishing fleet (these people know where the fish are as their livlihoods depend on it) you will often see them working within only a couple of miles from shore and sometimes in late summer and Autumn you will see them working at less than a mile. This to me further proves my theory that there is just as many fish in the first few miles of sea as there is in the next 200.

Word Spread recently in Whitby that from an oil industry survey vessel, working 3 miles from the coast between Whitby and Boulby to the north, the ships crew had had enjoyed some excellent fishing on an evening. One report was that 2 ling in excess of 50 pounds had been taken and a cod close to the Brittish record had been boated. The anglers allegedly had been unwilling to weigh their fish and publicise this as apparently it is against their companies policy to allow fishing from the boat. But it just goes to show that the big fish like the 56 pound record of Noel cooks are still around, and living on the inshore grounds at Whitby.

Peeler crabbers will need a licence

Today I recieved a rather disturbing email from Nigel Proctor who heads up the Yalasa conservation group (www.yalasa.co.uk) I attend. The email outlines THe North eastern sea fisheries committe proposed bye law to introduce the requirement for people collecting peeler crabs from the shore to have a licence to do so. Even worse for sea anglers is that the new licence will only allow you to collect 10 crabs each day, that could be a total of 5 green shore crabs and 5 velvets. THis is the email which outlines the bye law which could come into effect early in 2007.

Dear all,

just got the articles through this am from the NESFC wrt the above byelaw.

The byelaw is the permit to fish for Lobster, crab, velvet crab and whelk and applies to all of the NESFC district (River Tyne to Donna Nook (Humber Estuary)). The proposal will amend the present byelaw by prohibiting the collection and retention of the above species unless the collector holds an annual permit issued by the NESFC.

For those not actively involved in the commercial sector (hobby or unlicensed fishermen), a new limited annual shellfish permit will be issued, this permit and the restrictions applied will be strictly per vessel irrespective of the number of persons on board. The allowances will remain the same i.e., 2 lobsters or 10 crab (of any of the species specified in total, not per species) and 30 whelk per day per vessel. The byelaw also goes on to state that these restrictions will apply to anyone not using a vessel (collection from the shore), which is a change from the old regulation.

However, the biggest change is the introduction of the green shore crab into the species list, therefore, according to the byelaw, to collect green shore crab for use as bait within the district, you will have to have an annual permit and cannot collect more than 10 shore crabs per day. This is a significant change, and one that obviously restricts angling activity, from a personal point of view I buy mine along with others from outwith the area, however, I know other members and many anglers collect their own (including velvets etc.) and they will/could be open to prosecution.

I've spoken to the dCFO this am over this issue and at the present they are keen to proceed with the byelaw (to get in by January 1st 2007), it appears that there are no conservation drivers to protect shore crab, although he did state that there had been a noticeable decline at and around Flamboro Head, I pointed out that it was probable that velvets were as much responsible for this. It looks like they just wish to lump all crabs together to simplify the legislation, although he did mention that one fisherman was landing a couple of boxes of shore crab each week to send to Portugal (this I know goes on in other areas), however, I don't think it likely that there is any financial benefit from sending a couple of boxes of shore crab all the way to Portugal.

The proposal goes before the committee on 25th July, and I need to gauge the feeling of the sector, any additional thoughts would help, we also need to put this out to a wider audience, any takers (Glenn)?

Cheers for now, and I look forward with anticipation to comments!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nigel

Whitby summer angling / fishing festival 2006

Whitby big cod angling festival
With only 4 days to go in the Whitby summer angling festival its close at the top with Whitby sea angling club member Dave Perret currently leading the way with his fine Whitby cod of 22 pounds 8 ounces. I have to say what a pleasure it is to see a cod at the top of the leader board as the past few years have seen mostly ling leading the way. Perhaps the cod recovery plan is working and the big cod are finally returning to Whitby the home of the Uk and brittish cod record.Speaking to Dave after the weigh in he informed me that he caught his 22 pound cod from John Whitton;'s boat Never can tell A and that he was no more than 2 and a half miles from shore when he hooked into the monster Which dispells the myth that the inshore grounds are now a waste of time and just goes to show that you dont need to dissapear over the horizon to catch big cod at Whitby. Dave is hoping that his cod will stay in the lead untill the end of the festival, and if it does he will claim the £1500 first place prize, £200 for the biggest cod and £50 for being a daily winner. The drinks are on you Dave!!!!

In second place at the moment in the festival is Nick Ball from Rotherham with a big ling from Paul Kilpatricks sea - otter 2 that came to the scales at just a few ounces short of the 20 pound mark. Nick is no stranger to the big fish and indeed has won the Whitby angling festival in the past when he was only a junior angler. Speaking to Nick When he fished again on Saturday and took a daily prize with a 15 pound ling he informed me that he uses big Mackeral flappers for bait when targeting the big whitby cod and ling and went on to suggest that a good tip to all anglers is to use this technique for targeting the bigger fish at Whitby. You can find more Pictures of Nick and his big fish on Paul Kilpatricks website at www.sea-otter2.co.uk

Currently in third place is John Wilcock from Barnsley with another big Whitby cod of 19 pounds 15 ounces. John was fishing on Rich Wards boat Shy torque when he caught his monster cod again on a mackeral flapper.

First and second place in the Junior section currently lies with young Lee Keegan from Scotland. Lee Caught 2 Ling on Shytorque early in the festival, the biggest being just over 19 pounds which makes him thje first place junior.

big whitby cod goldsborough kettleness wreck and reef fishing
Third place Junior is young Whitby angler Barnaby Sixsmith with a huge cod of 10 pounds. Barney says he set his stall out for the big whitby cod and fished all day with mackeral flapper for bait. Again this proves that a good cod catching tip at whitby for both ling and big cod is to use mackeral when fishing the ground and wrecks off whitby.

Well thats about all I can be bothered to type for the time being. When the festival is finished I will be writing a full report which can be viewed within the whitby charter skippers website. Anyone wanting to take a sea fishing trip from whitby either to fish the rough ground or the wrecks would be well advised to pay a visit to the charter skippers website, whatever you want to catch be it cod ling bass wrasse catfish pollock haddock or whiting your best chance is wither wreck or reef fishing on one of the registerd association boats. If you want to debate techniques or join in some banter with other sea anglers who take fishing trips from whitby then why not visit our new forum for fishing at whitby http://wsaa.proboards106.com/index.cgi.

fishing at runswick bay for cod and bass

Well I actually managed a couple of hours fishing today up at Runswick bay for cod and bass. I drew a blank but enjoyed the frsh air anyways. I fished 2 rods, 1 with peeler crab as bait and I was spinning for bass with the other rod.

Whitby charter skippers summer festival 2006

A glorious day with temperatures in the mid 20's met the anglers as they boarded the associations fourteen boats early this morning. Anticipation was high and so far the anglers have not been dissapointed. At roughly mid stage on the first day the skippers are reporting good catches with cod to almost double figures and ling estimated to around 20 pound already been taken.

Paul on sea-otter 2 has emailed me these pictures in of the early catches on his boat.

More pictures and reports to follow later today - after the match.
