Sunset and dolphins at Whitby on the Eskbelle sunset cruise

Well this one isn't fishing but it was such a great evening I had to put it in the blog.

Ive always fancied doing the sunset cruise from Whitby upto sandsend but have always struggled to get our lass to come along (fixed goggle eyed on that crap big brother on the box). Finally after hinting for a few years I finally got her to come tonight with the kids. Well it was absolutely amazing to say the least. We sailed at 8.45 and headed down to Sandsend which is about 3 mile from Whitby. We stayed close to the shore all the way down and at times were in stone throwing distance of land. We saw the salmon netters and anglers on the beach and as we headed toward Sandsend corner we watched the sun set over the cliffs. Then we headed out past sandsend ness end and amazingly watched the sun set for a second time , this time into the sea - it was stunning. As we headed back towards Whitby the skipper informed us that there was a school of Dolphins about 500 yards in front. At first I wasnt too bothered as I thought they couldnt possibly be dolphins so close to shore, infact my experience suggested they were boring old porpoise. Then we got closer and they started leaping out the water. There must have been 30 or 40 of them with young swimming around the boat and at times leaping out of the water - they were definately dolphins, the skipper of the boat explained that when they jump as they were doing they would be rounding up the mackerel and herring shoals. It was the most amazing thing Ive seen at Whitby for many years. Even our lass was amazed and the kids loved it.

I took a few picks but unfortunately didnt get any good ones of the dolphins as the camera diesnt seem to snap instantly. If anyone ever visits Whitby and gets chance to go on the eskbelle sunset cruise I would thoroughly reccommend it.
