Whitby summer angling / fishing festival 2006

Whitby big cod angling festival
With only 4 days to go in the Whitby summer angling festival its close at the top with Whitby sea angling club member Dave Perret currently leading the way with his fine Whitby cod of 22 pounds 8 ounces. I have to say what a pleasure it is to see a cod at the top of the leader board as the past few years have seen mostly ling leading the way. Perhaps the cod recovery plan is working and the big cod are finally returning to Whitby the home of the Uk and brittish cod record.Speaking to Dave after the weigh in he informed me that he caught his 22 pound cod from John Whitton;'s boat Never can tell A and that he was no more than 2 and a half miles from shore when he hooked into the monster Which dispells the myth that the inshore grounds are now a waste of time and just goes to show that you dont need to dissapear over the horizon to catch big cod at Whitby. Dave is hoping that his cod will stay in the lead untill the end of the festival, and if it does he will claim the £1500 first place prize, £200 for the biggest cod and £50 for being a daily winner. The drinks are on you Dave!!!!

In second place at the moment in the festival is Nick Ball from Rotherham with a big ling from Paul Kilpatricks sea - otter 2 that came to the scales at just a few ounces short of the 20 pound mark. Nick is no stranger to the big fish and indeed has won the Whitby angling festival in the past when he was only a junior angler. Speaking to Nick When he fished again on Saturday and took a daily prize with a 15 pound ling he informed me that he uses big Mackeral flappers for bait when targeting the big whitby cod and ling and went on to suggest that a good tip to all anglers is to use this technique for targeting the bigger fish at Whitby. You can find more Pictures of Nick and his big fish on Paul Kilpatricks website at www.sea-otter2.co.uk

Currently in third place is John Wilcock from Barnsley with another big Whitby cod of 19 pounds 15 ounces. John was fishing on Rich Wards boat Shy torque when he caught his monster cod again on a mackeral flapper.

First and second place in the Junior section currently lies with young Lee Keegan from Scotland. Lee Caught 2 Ling on Shytorque early in the festival, the biggest being just over 19 pounds which makes him thje first place junior.

Third place Junior is young Whitby angler Barnaby Sixsmith with a huge cod of 10 pounds. Barney says he set his stall out for the big whitby cod and fished all day with mackeral flapper for bait. Again this proves that a good cod catching tip at whitby for both ling and big cod is to use mackeral when fishing the ground and wrecks off whitby.

Well thats about all I can be bothered to type for the time being. When the festival is finished I will be writing a full report which can be viewed within the whitby charter skippers website. Anyone wanting to take a sea fishing trip from whitby either to fish the rough ground or the wrecks would be well advised to pay a visit to the charter skippers website, whatever you want to catch be it cod ling bass wrasse catfish pollock haddock or whiting your best chance is wither wreck or reef fishing on one of the registerd association boats.
